Mirella Clark discusses her journey to the 2013 Las Vegas WBFF Worlds
After achieving first place and her pro card in the ‘Diva Fitness’ category in Denmark in April, fitness competitor and expert Mirella Clark secured her place at the world WBFF competition in Las Vegas which is taking place this weekend (24th-25th August). Mirella will be competing with the WBFF Pros – the Best of the Best!
KX has been with her every step of the way to help Mirella succeed, from training hard in the gym and nutritional advice to pampering sessions including bespoke facials and eyelash extensions. Before jetting off to compete we had a little one-to-one interview to discuss her journey.
What originally inspired you to get into fitness?
Being active is something that has been in me from a very early age. As a child, I was always involved in some form of activity…gymnastics, swimming, athletics, ballet, judo. I would always join in football with the boys and go off adventuring into the woods or cross-country…I guess you could say I was a bit of a tomboy!
What is a typical day for you like as an international personal trainer?
I can’t remember what it’s like to have a “typical day” in all honesty. This year has been rather hectic with comp prep and I’ve forgotten what it’s like to have a “normal life”. The first half of this year I have spent mainly in Abu Dhabi, working for a VIP client. Once life returns to somewhat normality, a typical day will probably involve training clients, training myself, dealing with my online clients and working on building on my business and brand with my Diva Sisters.
What has a typical day been like for you now you’re in the run up to the WBFF Worlds?
I’m up very early as I have so much to get done and organize (I’m planning my wedding at the same time!). I get up at 6am, have breakfast and reply to emails. I may train a few clients before I hit the gym myself. I eat every few hours so I have to have all my food prepped and ready to take with me wherever I go. I try to squeeze in time to practice my stage walking. Most evenings are spent in the kitchen, cooking, cleaning and prepping my food for the next day. And then checking my emails again. Very rarely do I get an evening where I can just relax in front of the TV.
What Beauty treatments are you having before competing in the WBFF?
Kx have very kindly sponsored me to go to the Worlds in Vegas so I’m being treated to lots of beauty treatments at their wonderful spa. So far I have had 2 amazing massages, which I can’t recommend highly enough. I have a facial, eyelash extensions, manicure and pedicure booked in before I fly to Vegas. I love a bit of pampering, especially with life as hectic as it is right now. It’s my only “me time”.
What career achievement are you most proud of?
Changing career in my late twenties to become a PT and Coach. I spent most of my spare time studying whilst working full-time in an office job. It certainly wasn’t the easiest thing to do when you’re used to a good regular salary coming in but I absolutely love what I do so it was worth the sacrifice and hard graft to get to where I am now. Being awarded 1st place and a Pro Card in the Diva Fitness category in the WBFF European Championships in Denmark in April has definitely been the highlight of my career so far.
Wow – Congratulations. How did it feel to win first place and your pro-card in the WBFF Diva Fitness Competition earlier this year?
Just amazing! I have no other words for it really. I was all very surreal at the time and it took me a while to come down to earth. I only ever planned to compete the once but since the show I am hooked!
What do you say to yourself before you go on stage?
You’ve done everything in your power to get to where you are…just have fun and enjoy it!
How do you keep yourself motivated?
I have always been very driven and self-motivated. This is my passion so I don’t find it hard to push myself. I like to set myself challenges and always strive for more than what I have achieved so far. I love what I do…that’s my motivation.
What is the best piece of advice you have ever been given?
A common piece of advice, but “believe in yourself” is a mantra I repeat to myself on a daily basis.
What is your go-to healthy recipe/meal?
I am a big food lover and love to experiment in the kitchen and try new foods. You can’t beat a good steak and chips, or sushi. I love to make homemade chicken fajitas, guacamole and sweet potato wedges.
What treat are you dreaming of after WBFF?
Well I don’t eat dairy or gluten so that pretty much narrows down what I can actually enjoy post-comp. I’m currently hooked on Coyo coconut yoghurt (dairy-free) so I’m looking forward to eating a big tub of that without having to weigh it out into portions. Give me a jar of peanut butter with a spoon and I’ll be happy!
So what do you think of ‘fad’ diets?
Ridiculous! People always want that magic formula but there isn’t one. Diets don’t work. What works is a healthy balanced approach to food, choosing whole foods over packaged and processed foods and being mindful of what you’re putting into your mouth.
What do you think about the ‘only men can lift’ school of thought?
Does this even exist anymore? I think women just need to be educated more on the subject of lifting weights and men on what works best for a woman’s physique.
What do you do on your rest days?
Try to relax, although with everything currently going on in my life any “rest” is few and far between.
And finally, what are your plans for the rest of 2013?
I get married in Ibiza and spending the month of September out there so I’m very excited about that. Then it will be back to London to start working hard on building my business/brand.
All of us here at KX wish Mirella all the luck in the 2013 Las Vegas WBFF Worlds this weekend and will be keeping you posted on her progress.
Best of luck Mirella.
