Top nutrition tips for fat-burning

1. Breakfast like a king – ditch sugar and carb-laden breakfasts of cereals, toast, jam and fruit juice – if you want to naturally control appetite, try a savoury, protein-rich breakfast – think eggs & smoked salmon on a slice of wholegrain rye, or make use of leftovers – chicken, avocado & a slice of wholegrain bread

2. Prioritise protein – including a serving of protein at each meal will keep you feeling fuller for longer. Choose from lean meats, free-range poultry, fish, seafood, eggs, cheese or tofu.

3. Big-up vegetables and salad – bulk meals out with lots of non-starchy vegetables and salad – these are low energy dense, but packed full of disease-busting phytonutrients and fibre

4. Careful with carbs. Pick your carbs carefully and eat modest servings of fibre-rich, low GI options, such as wholegrain breads and pasta, brown basmati rice, quinoa, beans, pulses and sweet potato – give the white ‘refined’ carbs a wide berth. Eat these good carbs earlier in the day, and before resistance exercise sessions.

5. ‘Breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dine like a pauper’. It’s not just what you eat, but when you eat that counts. Eat your evening meal early and keep carbs and sugars to a minimum.

6. Feel the burn. Try doing your aerobic exercise in a fasted state (e.g. first thing in the morning, before breakfast). This will encourage fat burning as there is less readily available energy to utilise.
