WALKABOUT FOUNDATION: LONDON WALKABOUT 2013 | WALKING FOR THOSE WHO CAN'T
In 2008, KX member Carolina Gonzalez-Bunster decided to take a massive leap of faith, to risk everything and quit her stable, secure job at Goldman and Sachs to pursue her lifelong passion. Inspired and motivated to help the millions of people in the world who are paralyzed, like her older brother Luis, who suffered a spinal cord injury after a car accident aged 18, she quit to start a charity called Walkabout Foundation, which focuses upon funding research to find a cure for paralysis and donating wheelchairs to people in need all over the world.
Since it’s beginnings in 2009, Walkabout has funded millions of pounds in paralysis research, helped enable the first paralyzed man to stand and step again, and has donated over 3,000 ‘RoughRiders’ wheelchairs to adults and children in need in developing countries. RoughRider Wheelchairs are completely customizable to the individual and Walkabout Foundation ensures a dedicated team modifies the chair to the recipient’s exact needs. They are wheelchairs made specifically for remote areas sturdy, tall, and as its name suggests- tough! Best of all, the wheels are actual bicycle wheels, making punctures or broken parts a breeze to repair.
There are an estimated 100 million people worldwide who need a wheelchair – but cannot afford one; and in the USA alone paralysis affects more than 6 million people. The most important objective for the foundation for 2013 is to help even more individuals and to help fund even more groundbreaking research through Dr. Reggie Edgerton’s lab at UCLA, the Christopher Reeve Foundation, and the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis.
For the third year in a row, Walkabout Foundation is organizing a city walkabout, a 5k walk in central London on Saturday, September 28th, 2013 to raise funds to find a cure for paralysis and donate wheelchairs to people in need around the world. As KX are sponsoring the walk, this guarantees that 100% of all money raised goes directly to the cause.
Registration is free but you are encouraged to raise money from family and friends for going the distance on Walkabout’s individual fundraising pages.
Here’s what the money you raise can buy:
£10 = front wheel
£21 = back rest
£30 = main frame
£200 = an entire wheelchair
To register, simply email participants’ names to email@example.com or click here to visit the Walkabout Foundation website
Walk for people that cannot walk, walk and change a life, walk and donate a wheelchair to someone in need.
